Cultural events were a gift to us all

-

To the editor,

During the first two weeks of September, the region witnessed a remarkable presentation of Mi’kmaq and Scottish Culture.

Millbrook First Nation hosted its 19th annual PowWow while James and Linda Finnie, Scottish Immigrants to Colchester, organized the inaugural Colchester Highland Games. Each of the celebrations offered the community a tremendous display of music, dance, food, ceremony and traditional crafts and cultural traditions.

The Millbrook PowWow drew indigenous leaders, cultural dancers and drummers from various First Nation communities across the Maritimes, Canada and the U.S. The Millbrook First Nation invited local dignitaries and new Canadians to participate in the Grand Entry which included members of the Mi’kmaq Grand Council, Millbrook Chief Bob Gloade, community elders and indigenous youth.

The celebration of the inaugural Colchester Highland Games in Bible Hill featured a vast array of Scottish, Gaelic and Celtic inspired dancing, music and games featuring participants from various parts of Canada and Scotland. The Clann An Drumma, a drumming and bagpipe ensemble from Scotland, waived their participation fee as a tribute to Canada 150. Millbrook Chief Bob Gloade was named Honorary Chieftain of the inaugural games in recognition of the First Nation being the indigenous peoples of the area. The new Colchester Tartan was also unveiled during the weekend event.

The celebration of the Mi’kmaq and Scottish Cultures, which have strong roots to the area, drew a large audience to embrace the area’s cultural diversity. Congratulations are in order for Millbrook First Nation, James and Linda Finnie, the many volunteers and participants who contributed to these cultural experiences. The delivery of two successful events offered the community a glimpse into the Mi’kmaq and Scottish culture, and drew many outsiders to the region, which contributed to the vibrancy and appeal of our community.

On behalf of the Truro and Colchester Chamber of Commerce, and its more than 400 member businesses, thank you for your leadership, energy and passion to deliver these experiences for the benefit of all.

Alex Stevenson,

President, Truro and Colchester Chamber of Commerce
