Londonderry man sentenced for unlawful confinement
A Londonderry man was recently sentenced to 30 months in prison after pleading guilty to the unlawful confinement and assault of a woman.
Jason Edward Alexander, 34, of Baseline Road also pled guilty to uttering threat against his victim as well as breaching court undertakings by continuing to communicate with the woman after he had been ordered not to.
The woman’s name is being held from publication because Alexander had originally also been charged with sexual assault. The sexual assault charge was dismissed by the Crown as part of a joint sentencing recommendation.
Court heard he had told the woman he was going to take her up to Londonderry Mountain and that she wouldn’t be coming down. While there, he also made repeated threats that he was going to kill her.
Alcohol was cited as a trigger for Alexander’s behaviour and he told the court that he has been taking advantage of programs offered within the prison system to control himself in future.
“I’m very remorseful for my actions and I am taking this opportunity to try and better myself,” he told the court.
Sentencing conditions also included submitting a DNA sample and that he be banned for lifetime from possessing firearms. He was also issued victim surcharge fines totaling $800.
At the time of his sentencing, Alexander was already serving a two-year term for four breakand-enter convictions from the Amherst area between April and September 2016.
