Baggs takes on leadership role

Riley Baggs Hometown: Conception Bay

Age: 20

Size: six-foot-two, 190 pounds Number: 2

Bearcat-of-the-Week honours went to fourth-year Bearcat Riley Baggs.

His unassisted powerplay goal in the 4-1 loss to the Mariners was his first of the season. In both weekend games, he was called upon to play increased minutes in all situations.

When short staffed in Baggs a position, it’s incumbent on the veterans to pick up the slack.

Baggs got his hockey start in the Conception Bay regional program, working his way through the classifications to the bantam level when he joined the CBS Renegades for a season, followed by one with the Marks Dakota Wild, winning provincial bantam honours.

Next up was a pair of seasons with the St John’s Maple Leafs. The 2014 draft pick gave the Bearcats a coveted right shot and a sound understanding of defensive zone play. His game grew each season.

In each of the last two seasons he was selected to participate in the Eastern Canadian Junior “A” Challenge.

He finished last year with five goals and 25 helpers. Wearing a letter means he will take on a heavier leadership role.

Roster addition

The Bearcats added forward, Alex MacDonald (20), to the lineup last weekend. The Windsor Junction native was a 2013 Bearcat pick. Prior to suiting up with the Alberni Bulldogs (BCHL) last year, he played two seasons with St. Andrews College, capturing the Ontario Athletic Association title both years.

On tap

The Bearcats are in Miramichi tonight to square off against the Timberwolves at 7:30 p.m.
