Catherine Campbell honoured in Stellarton
Susan and Dwight Campbell always remember that time when their daughter Catherine “kept us in stitches,” as she got ready for the homecoming dance.
Now, more than two years after her murder in Halifax, Const. Catherine Campbell was honoured with a memorial bench unveiled by her fellow police officers and firefighters in her hometown of Stellarton, Saturday.
“She loved her hometown and she was very dedicated to anything she undertook,” said Susan of her daughter.
Campbell was an officer with the Truro Police Service for six years, and was also a volunteer firefighter for 10 years.
Both her mother and her friends in law enforcement remembered Campbell as someone who always wanted to help people, but also knew how to make her colleagues laugh and have fun on the job.
“She never wanted children to be afraid of police officers and she always had time to speak to children,” said Susan.
Her fellow constable Judd Hall from Truro recalled one call police received of a woman in distress.
Campbell was one of the officers responding and she went the extra mile to speak with the woman, promising her that she could call her whenever she felt overwhelmed.
“She’s just a beautiful person,” said Hall.
Off duty, Campbell was a loyal friend to those around her. Her friend Nancy MacCulloch, an officer with the Stellarton Police, said Campbell helped her through a divorce several years ago.
“She was there to let me cry on her shoulder,” said MacCulloch.
The bench unveiling was attended by police from both Stellarton and Truro as well as firefighters.
Mayor Danny McGillivray spoke before prayers in Campbell’s memory were recited and the bench bearing her name was then formally unveiled.
