Cougars win Wall of Fame Cup

The Cobequid Cougars continue to stake their claim as the top high school boys’ volleyball team in the Maritimes.

The Cougars won their fifth straight tournament, rhyming off an undefeated record to capture top honours at the 13th annual Colonel Gray Wall of Fame Cup in Charlottet­own.

Cobequid defeated Three Oaks of Summerside in a hotly contested final 25- 19, 25- 21.

In round- robin play, the Cougars defeated Bluefield ( 22- 25, 25- 16, 15- 8), Sackville ( 25- 18, 2517) and the host Colonel Gray Colonels ( 25- 17, 25- 11). IN a semifinal, CEC upended Horton ( 25- 12, 25- 10).

Leading the Cougars’ success was Thomas Vickers ( 80 per cent passing, 8.5 blocking points), Ryan McEachren ( 17 perfect passes, 12 service points, 23 kills), Sam Lilly ( 17 perfect passes, 26 kills), Adam McEachren ( 76 per cent passing, 59 per cent offensive serving, eight blocking points), Dean Berry ( 58 per cent offensive serving,

31 per cent kill efficiency) as well as setters Austin Atkinson ( 12 service points, 11 defensive digs) and David Sandeson ( 4.5

blocking points) who assisted in an outstandin­g 0.462 team hitting average.

Vickers was selected an all- star

and Sam Lilly was tournament MVP.

Next up for the Cougars is the 34th annual Westisle Wolverine Classic this weekend.
