Truro dentist offering local sports teams the chance to wear performance-enhancing mouthpiece

Call it a new-age concept, if you will.

A Truro dentist is hoping to help a local sport team get a leg up on its competition by working with the players’ mouths.

“I said we want to give one lucky sport team in our home town the edge, with respect to performance,” Dr. Anil Makkar said, of a Victoria Court Dental Facebook contest involving his New Age Performance recreational mouthpieces.

“We will pick one sports team that will be personally fitted by myself,” he said. “All you have to do is get your team to share the post as many times as you can.”

Makkar and his New Age Performance business partners recently appeared on the season premiere of the CBC reality show, Dragons’ Den. They came away with a deal with several of the dragons that is currently in the final stages of the due diligence process.

Makkar has been working on the development and advancement of his performance-enhancing mouthpieces since 2005. He has also worked with various professional athletes in recent years, including Brian Shaw, an American strongman competitor and a multiple winner of the World’s Strongest Man competitions.

Makkar said the mouthpieces help enhance an athlete’s performance with increased strength and by boosting their balance, flexibility, oxygen uptake, range of motion and grind protection.

After receiving requests from various parts of the country about fitting sports teams with the mouthpieces, he decided the best place to start was at home.

“Everybody wants to be a winner,” he said. “It’s just nice to contribute to the community and hopefully the team that does get to use it, will see some major differences in their playing.”

The competition, which is to be decided Friday, is open to any sports team within Truro and Colchester County.

Makkar said Wednesday that members from at least a couple of dozen teams – including football, volleyball, cheerleading, boxing, rugby and others – had been sharing the Facebook post.

“It will be interesting to see who comes out a winner,” he said. “What I really found interesting is that there is participation but there are one or two teams that are just on fire.”

And Makkar said he is absolutely looking forward to the outcome of the competition and the long-term results.

“I would like to work with the coach to track it,” he said. “Because the coaches, they know their players and they know how they perform. And, so the coach is going to see the difference.”
