Between a rock and a creative place
To the editor:
Ever wonder how many minerals are in your smartphone? Did you know there is rock in your toothpaste?
The Mining Association of Nova Scotia has launched its fourth year of the Mining ROCKS! Video Contest and is challenging students to have fun while discovering how mining and quarrying affects everything in our daily lives.
The contest, which is open to all junior high and high school students in Nova Scotia, will award $8,000 in prizes; the winner of each category wins $1,000 and the runner-up wins $500.
Students can produce either a one- to three-minute video, or a 30-second commercial, about mining and quarrying. The videos can explore a range of aspects about the industry, including economic importance, employment opportunities, environment and reclamation, historical facts and beneficial end-uses of mining products. Essentially, students can focus on any subject about mining and quarrying found on our educational website: www.NotYourGrandfathersMining.ca.
Students will upload their video at http://notyourgrandfathersmining.ca/ contest where they can also view contest details. A panel of judges, who are mainly independent of the industry, will pick the winners for the Best Junior High School Video, Best High School Video, Best 30-Second Commercial and Best Comedy. The fifth category, the People’s Choice winner, will be decided by the public through an online vote. Judges include Margaret Miller, Minister of Natural Resources, Membertou Chief Terry Paul, and several media and film professionals.
The deadline for submissions is Feb. 23, 2018.
