Herb Peppard
Herb Peppard believes that making your dreams become reality and never giving up are the keys to longevity.
is well-known and respected veteran of the Second World War has led a very active life.
As a child, he always challenged himself to see how strong he was. Eighty years ago he began his lifelong passion of weight training at Ed Ogilvie’s Blacksmith Shop. He competed around the province as a member of the Truro Weightlifting Club.
He enlisted in the Second World War, and because of his strong physique, discipline in training and exemplary moralebuilding attitude, he was chosen for the elite commando unit: e First Special Service Force.
After the war he brought his rigorous training home and chose the new sport of bodybuilding as his means to a lifetime of health, strength and tness.
Herb and his wife, Greta, developed diets, exercise training and posing routines. In the days before public fitness facilities, Herb developed an extensive gym in his home where countless local youth and police professionals began their training. Herb also built gyms in Pictou and Queens counties where so many Nova Scotian bodybuilders got their start.
Bodybuilding came to Nova Scotia in 1974 and Herb competed at the age of 54! He won the title of Mr. Master Nova Scotia twice — at age 63 and again at age 68.
He competed internationally and was featured in Ironman Magazine.
Herb has served as a columnist with the Truro Daily News for many years, often writing in praise of exercise and a healthy diet, which he believes are key cornerstones to living a long and healthy life.
He also noted in one of his columns, “Challenge yourself. You haven’t lived until you’ve accomplished something you thought was impossible.”
Herb has always encouraged young and old alike to stay active by his shining example, even today at the age of 97. With “the spirit and heart of a champion” (Ironman), Herb Peppard is a Canadian bodybuilding pioneer and the Father of bodybuilding in Nova Scotia.
e Truro Sports Heritage Society is honoured to induct this brave, wise and healthy living gentleman into the Colchester Sports Hall of Fame.
