Open house
The Colchester Sexual Assault Centre held an open house recently and more than 75 visitors came to check out the new space.
Everyone who dropped by appeared to be impressed with the Colchester Sexual Assault Centre’s bright, spacious new location in downtown Truro.
The centre held an open house on Dec. 7 and more than 75 visitors came to check out the space in the Bank of Montreal building (35 Commercial St., Suite 403).
“We love it here,” said Kendra Mackinnon, executive director at the CSAC. “We moved in Nov. 15 and having this space has helped an incredible amount. It’s warm and welcoming and extremely private.”
The new site has a common area where people can wait and group events can be held, as well as four offices. Mackinnon, Margaret Mauger (counsellor) and Avalon Moore (counsellor) have their own offices and the fourth is rented out to Kristi Garrido, of Soulspace Counselling Therapy.
About 160 people visit the centre for counselling each month, and because it’s the only sexual assault centre in Nova Scotia that accepts male clients, men come from across the province.
The centre also provides court support and accompaniment, educational presentations, displays for events, and collaborates with other agencies to organize events and work on programs.
The CSAC had run satellite location in Enfield but that was recently closed in order to save money.
“We’ve had four new board members join recently and we’d like to have four more to bring the number up to 12,” said Mackinnon. “We need enthusiastic people who are willing to get involved.”
Anyone interested in becoming a board member, or volunteering in other ways, can contact Mackinnon at 9028974366, info@colchestercsac.ca or message the centre through Facebook atwww. facebook. com/ colchestersac.
