Halifax man charged with sexually assaulting another woman

- By Steve Bruce

A Halifax man who was arrested last month and charged with sexually assaulting a woman at a university student residence in September now faces new allegations involving a different woman.

Matthew Albert Percy, 34, was arrested again Friday at his home on Birches Drive in Armdale.

He appeared in Halifax provincial court Monday on charges of sexual assault, choking to overcome resistance, and voyeurism for allegedly recording video of the incident.

Police allege Percy assaulted the woman Sept. 3 at an Armdale residence. The woman filed a report with police on the evening of Dec. 5, the same day Percy got bail on the other matters.

On Monday, prosecutor Jamie Van Wart told the court the Crown was requesting three days to prepare for a bail hearing for Percy.

Judge Ann Marie Simmons scheduled the hearing for Friday and remanded Percy back to the Dartmouth jail.

Last month, police charged Percy with sexual assault and voyeurism in connection with an incident at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, where Percy was employed as a groundskeeper.

A woman went to the SMU residence desk Sept. 15 at about 4 a.m. and asked that staff call police because she had been sexually assaulted by a man known to her.

Halifax Regional Police located Percy in a dorm room and arrested him without incident. He was taken in for questioning but was released without charges pending further investigation.

Percy was re-arrested Nov. 29. The Crown consented to his release Dec. 5 on a $25,000 recognizance with strict conditions, including house arrest.

SMU confirmed last month that Percy was no longer working there.
