The Grinch helps house win ‘Light Up Bible Hill’ contest

- By lynn CURWIN

The Grinch has been seen in a positive light, as the Christmas villain is part of a display in Bible Hill that earned a home top honours in a village contest.

Last year, the Grinch that Carver Thompson set outside his home tried to live up to his reputation, but this year he helped the house become the Light Up Bible Hill winner.

“The Grinch is usually a favourite with people, but last year he blew over and cracked siding on the house,” said Thompson. “I had to replace a piece of siding so this year he’s not close to the house.”

Thompson makes many of his decorations by projecting images onto plywood, cutting them out and then painting.

“I like to look and see what other people have to get ideas,” he said. “Some of the decorations came with us when we moved here from Ontario, in 2013, but we add to it every year.”

The lights are choreographed to music that can be heard from the street, and snowmen, trees, gifts, a reindeer and Santa can be seen around the property.

Thompson’s wife, Julie, and their four children enjoy both the decorations and the reactions they get.

“We get quite a few comments from people going by,” he said. “It’s great to see the smiles it brings to kids faces.”

The decorations will remain up until after New Year’s Day and can be seen at 28 Retson Dr.

The house also ends up being one of the most decorated in the neighbourhood for Halloween.
