This area is continuing to build on successes

-

To the editor,

Eyes from around the globe were on Truro the past week as the region played host to the World Junior A Challenge.

Hockey enthusiasts, NHL scouts and media were welcomed by the community to witness hockey prospects from Canada, United States, Switzerland, Russia and Czech Republic compete at the Rath-eastlink Community Centre (RECC).

Attracting events of this calibre to the region was the vision of the steering committee when a regional civic centre was proposed in 2010. Over the past seven years, the board, management and staff of the RECC have refined their operations in an effort to make the facility sustainable.

Through membership growth, attention paid to expenses, attraction of marquee events and the support of the residents of Colchester, the facility has proudly turned the page, recently reporting healthy back-toback financial quarters.

In a short period, Truro has become the envy of many. Strategic investments by our provincial and municipal governments, First Nations and business community have delivered a modern hospital, community centre, library, civic square, farmers’ market and French school to the region.

These infrastructure investments have afforded the community the ability to attract tourists, events and talent, while further retaining the area residents.

Over the past year, the community has proudly hosted Nova Scotia Music Week, The Roger’s Hometown Hockey Tour, World Junior A Challenge, Colchester Highland Games and CMRC Motocross Nationals, to name a few. Many of these events could not be hosted without the financial support of the Town of Truro, County of Colchester, Town of Stewiacke, Millbrook First Nation, the business community and the many volunteers who plan and host the events.

On behalf of the Truro and Colchester Chamber of Commerce and its 430 member businesses, we extend our compliments and gratitude to the region’s councils for the support and confidence to invest in the region’s facilities and events; the many volunteers who have identified, planned and delivered on many unique and memorable experiences; and the residents of Colchester County for the patience and support that have equally contributed to the vibrancy that citizens and tourists are experiencing in the area.

President
