Bond leads Centurions

Truro swimmer wins five of six events at annual Candy Cane meet

Madison Bond of the Truro Centurions captured first-place honours in five of six events she entered at the recent Candy Cane swim meet at Centennial Pool in Halifax.

Bond, competing in the 13 and under girls division, took home gold in the 200m and 400m IM events and the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststro­ke events. She was also second in the 200m back.

The annual Candy Cane meet is typically hosted every year by the Truro Centurions, however, the team was unable to host this year because the World Junior A Challenge hockey tournament was being played at the RECC.

The Candy Cane meet is largest age group meet of the year in the province in terms of the number swimmers due to the fact that swimmers with their junior and senior qualifying times compete together at the meet. The event featured 300 swimmers from across the Maritimes.

Julianne Dowe of the Centurions finished second in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststro­ke events in the 13 and under category, and was third in the 50m back, fourth in the 100m back, and sixth in the 50m free. Hayley Puddester was third in the 400m IM.

In the girls 14 and 15 division, Olivia Langley was second in the 200m and 50m backstroke, third in the 100m free, and sixth in the 200m IM. Katie Archibald finished second in the both the 50m and 100m breast and Amy Barnhill was fifth in the 200m fly, fifth in the 50m fly, and sixth in the 800m free.

In the girls 16 and over category Jordyn Mcnutt finished fourth in the 100m breast, sixth in the 50m breast and sixth in the 200M IM.

In the boys 14 and 15 division, Ben Mingo was first in the 200m back, second in the 100m back, third in the 100m breast, fourth in the 50m breast and fifth in the 100m free. Brett Hutt-semple finished second in the 200m IM, first in the 50m fly and fifth in the 100m fly, while Zander Smith finished fifth in the 200m back, second in the 50m fly and first in the 100m fly.

In the boys 16 and over category Dean Sangster enjoyed success in the boys 16 and over division with first-place finishes in the 50m free and 200m back. He was fourth in the 100m fly.

In the boys para category, Danial Murphy finished first in the 800m free and Matthew Hunter was second.

Truro relay teams also came home with medals. The team of Grace Baini, Julianne Dowe, Jenna Gallant and Madison Bond won silver in the girls 13 and under 200m free relay.

On the boys side, the team of Ben Mingo, Brett Hutt-semple, Zander Smith, and Dean Sangster won bronze in the 16 and over 200m free relay.
