Resource centre welcomes new team members
There are a couple of new faces with the Central Nova Women’s Resource Centre.
Stephanie Atwood started this week as the women’s support worker and Knickolle Pitcher has assumed her new position, as peer support co-ordinator.
When Atwood was going through a difficult time, there was a team of women who supported her; now she wants to provide support for others.
“Helping women overcome obstacles and grow is my passion,” she said.
“I’ve tried other careers but this is in my blood.
“A wonderful group of women taught me I could reach out, and I want to encourage women of all ages to reach out when they need help. I want to work with women of all ages.”
For Pitcher, helping people find their voice is something she values, and she feels serving as peer support co- ordinator will give her more opportunity to do this.
“I’m really excited about this,” she said.
“In my private work as a yoga therapist and facilitator I often work with groups, and I feel the role at the centre will afford me similar opportunities, as well as allow me to reach individuals and groups I might not otherwise have come in contact with. This is a nice fit for me.”
Pitcher studied English and psychology and is certified in trauma informed yoga therapy and integrative yoga. She is also a certified overcome anxiety facilitator.
She looks forward to finding our more about services that are available here.
“I’ve lived here now about 10 years and don’t know all the services that exist here. I feel I might not be the only one who doesn’t, so once I learn more I’ll be able to share that information.”
Atwood, 28, is originally from Shelburne and has been living in Pictou County for four years. She has worked as a program facilitator with community services and correction officers, as a youth program co-ordinator, and as executive assistant for a non-profit centre for youth and families.
She is also studying cognitive behavioural therapy and hopes to obtain a masters in social work.
“I’d like to put together a networking group with organizations and agencies that offer support to women, so we can meet and brainstorm, and find ways to help one another out,” Atwood said.
“I want to get to know everyone and see what they want me to offer,” she added. “They know the community and they know what’s needed.”
