Soothing sounds

Women offer ‘Vital Relaxation’ sessions in Truro

- BY LYNN CURWIN

Sitting on cushions in a dimly lit room, Evelyn Patriquin and Beth Amyot coax soothing sounds from quartz crystal bowls, chimes and other instruments.

Leaning back into chairs, and lying on mats, the people around them close their eyes and feel stress leave their minds and bodies.

Those in the room are taking part in a ‘Vital Relaxation’ session, where sound is used to help the body find its natural state of harmony.

“We don’t see ourselves as experts; we believe in opening the space here so that people can have their own personal experience,” said Patriquin, who has run music therapy programs.

“I noticed the responsiveness of people who might otherwise not have been responsive, and I knew how important sound was.”

She and Amyot met when they were both members of a choir. In 2003 they studied about healing through sound at a workshop in Quebec, and in 2004 they took a course in Seattle.

“Our energy system is a crucial part of our being, and this is good for absolutely everybody,” said Amyot. “It cleans the thought patterns and raises the frequency. We call it a sonic tonic.”

In 2011, they began offering sound relaxation sessions at Amyot’s home, and in 2012 they moved into the Douglas Street Recreation Centre.

They believe that the 99.9 per cent pure quartz crystal ‘singing bowls’ resonate with the

crystalline structures within the body, allowing it to regain some of its original harmony.

“The energy system is a crucial

part of our being,” said Amyot. “We often pay attention to diet and physical exercise but don’t think of the energy system.”

As well as holding public relaxation sessions, the women also design sessions for businesses, students, sports teams and other groups.
