Colchester United Way holding ‘Soup Fest’
Hot soup is always good on a cold day, and now there’s an opportunity to try 10 homemade soups on one day.
The United Way of Colchester County is holding its first ‘Soup Fest’ on Thursday, Feb. 15, from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., at the Truro Farmers’ Market.
“It’s like a wine tasting, but with soup,” said Terry Hearn, executive director with the United Way of Colchester County. “I got the idea from the United Way in Moncton. This is their thirteenth year holding a soup fest.”
Visitors will be able to try up to 10 soups, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten and dairy-free options. People can vote for their favourites and the top three will be honoured as the soups of 2018.
Soups will be created by local businesses and Farmers’ Market vendors including Bistro 22, Nook and Cranny, Taco Stiles and O’ Healthy Market. Bread and rolls will be supplied by bakeries such as Red Knot, Connie’s and Masstown Market, and Party Time is providing soup bowls and cutlery. Tea, coffee and apple cider will also be available.
“It’s going to be a really social event, with people who have tickets able to drop in any time,” said Hearn. “It’s a good way to try soups you haven’t tried before, and good exposure for businesses.”
There are only 150 tickets available, at a cost of $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased from the United Way at 90 Esplanade, Suite 2 (902-895-9313), the Truro Farmers’ Market (902-843-4004) and on Event Brite.
“It’s good food for a good cause, with a cozy atmosphere and good music,” said Margaret Congdon, manager of the farmers’ market. Snow date is Feb. 16. Everything is being provided for the event free of charge and proceeds will support United Way of Colchester’s Community Fund. Truro’s first Soup Fest is coming up, and will raise fund for the United Way of Colchester County.
