Hockey exchange about to make history

- BY JASON SIMMONDS

The Kensington, P.e.i.-bedford, Que., Peewee Friendship Hockey Exchange is close to receiving worldwide status. After all, there is no better stamp of authenticity than the Guinness World Records, previously known as the Guinness Book of World Records.

“We are all but in, but the exchange has to happen first,” said Wade Caseley, a former participant of the exchange and a member of this year’s 50th year committee in Kensington.

“At the 40th year they had a 40-year history book, so we made another history book that entails the last 10 years up to this year.

“We have approval from the Guinness World Records that we are the longest-running hockey exchange in the world and it’s an official attempt. Once the exchange is completed this year, we will have designation of being the world’s longest-running hockey exchange.”

Caseley praised the efforts of Greg Woodside, who headed up the drive to achieve this goal.

It was welcome news for longtime supporter and Kensington resident Rona Burt, who attempted to get the exchange recognized 20 years ago.

“When they came and told me it was going to happen, I nearly cried,” Burt said.

The exchange will celebrate the first half of the 50th event in Kensington this weekend. Kensington will make the return trip to Quebec in February.
