Truro’s Seedy Saturday celebration moved to new location

Gather your courage, and head for the seedy side of town.

Feb. 24 is Seedy Saturday, and this year’s events are being held at the Douglas Street Recreation Centre, providing more space than ever.

“There will be about 30 vendors, including a lot of new ones,” said Jennifer Tilley, one of the organizers. “There are a lot of seed sellers coming and there will be a big table to trade seeds.

There are also eight workshops, and the facility is wheelchair accessible.

Workshops include beginner beekeeping, growing day lilies from seed, growing flowers (with Marjorie Willison), healing with Mi’kmaq medicinal plants, growing cannabis, garden tool sharpening, mushroom cultivation and native pollinators.

A special feature this year is ‘Ask a Gardener,’ with Marjorie Willison and others answering questions.

There will be a family corner, with enchanted garden activities, and St. Andrew’s United Church Outreach committee will be selling homemade soups to fill bel- lies and raise funds for outreach programs.

The Town of Truro is a partner for the event, and will have information available, as well as people there to answer questions.

“It’s a celebration of community, and it’s family friendly,” said Tilley. “We have a lot of amazing resources in our community, and this includes things for everyone from beginners to experienced gardeners.

“It’s one of the biggest of these events in eastern Canada, and one of the longest consecutively running.”

This marks the 11th year a Seedy Saturday celebration will be held in Truro.

Activities are Saturday, Feb. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Douglas Street Recreation Centre. Admission is free.
