Gunfire strikes houses in Lower Sackville

- LOWER SACKVILLE, N.S.

Four houses were struck by bullets in a Lower Sackville neighbourhood on Monday.

Halifax District RCMP responded to Sunnyvale Crescent at about 1:45 p.m. after several residents reported gunshots, RCMP said in a news release Tuesday.

It’s believed the shooter was targeting a black car seen in the area at the time, not the houses hit by bullets.

“Those involved had a complete disregard for the safety of the public in this neighbourhood,” said Insp. Kevin O’blenis of the RCMP’S Integrated Criminal Division, in the release. “Investigators have found a bullet on a living room couch in one home, and in another a bullet went into the home and was found in a closet.”

The black vehicle, described as a small, older model with a loud exhaust, ran a stop sign and almost collided with another black car after it turned right onto Beaver Bank Road off Sunnyvale Crescent. Police want to talk to the people in the other vehicle. About the same time the black car left the neighbourhood, a man who had been on foot got into a white Honda CR-V which headed toward Hillsdale Crescent, police said.

The driver of the CR-V had a handgun, witnesses told police. He’s described as a white man, 25 to 30 years old, with a thin build who wore black clothing and white gloves. A passenger in the CR-V is described as a white woman in her 20s wearing a black coat with a furred hood pulled up. “I want to assure residents our members are actively working this investigation in the hope of identifying the persons responsible for this shooting,” O’blenis said. “We need anyone to come forward who may have seen anything out of the ordinary leading up to the shooting or after it occurred.”
