Dartmouth murder case adjourned so defence can review evidence

- BY STEVE BRUCE

A second- degree murder charge against a young Dartmouth man has been put over for more than five weeks to give his lawyer time to review the evidence.

Brandon Jake Hollohan, 23, is accused of killing Deborah Irene Yorke, 62, whose body was discov- ered at her apartment building on Farthington Place in north-end Dartmouth on Jan. 21.

Hollohan, who lives on nearby Jackson Road, was arrested four days later and first appeared in Dartmouth provincial court on Jan. 29.

The young man appeared in court again Tuesday via a video link from the Dartmouth jail.

Kathryn Piche was there on behalf of Hollohan’s lawyer, Stan Macdonald.

Piche told the court Macdonald had just received the evidence from the Crown and needs time to review it.

Judge Jean Whalen scheduled the case to return to court March 23 for the setting of dates for a preliminary inquiry.

Hollohan remains behind bars. If he wants bail, he will have to make an application in Nova Scotia Supreme Court.

When police announced the murder charge against Hollohan on Jan. 26, they said he and the victim knew each other.

“They were acquaintances,” Halifax Regional Police Supt. Jim Perrin said. “The level of connection will come out in the trial process.”

Perrin would not comment on whether the killing was drugrelated.
