Movie, starring Dafoe, Pattinson, could be filmed Yarmouth

- BY CARLA ALLEN

Yarmouth is buzzing at the prospect of a thriller being filmed at the Cape Forchu Lighthouse.

Last week, the Chronicle Herald posted a story online about The Lighthouse being filmed in the province. The movie is about a Nova Scotia lighthouse keeper in the early 20th century, starring actors Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson.

The Hollywood Reporter says the fantasy-horror film will explore old seafaring myths and will star Dafoe as an aging lighthouse keeper. It will begin filming in the spring and Robert Eggers will direct the movie, a follow up to his sleeper hit The Witch.

On Tuesday, Patti Durkee, a Municipality of Yarmouth councillor and Friends of the Yarmouth Light Society director, posted a request on Facebook for carpenters or handymen who might be interested in working on a set for the movie The Lighthouse to be filmed in Yarmouth. The post was shared by Town of Yarmouth mayor Pam Mood and 211 others by the next morning.

When Tara Mcclair from Screen Nova Scotia was contacted about the movie, she said Screen Nova Scotia only comments on projects when they are officially confirmed/announced. She supplied a link to a Feb. 15 article in the Hollywood Reporter with additional info on The Lighthouse.

Marly Somers, media contact for Nova Scotia Business Inc., says if the feature was to occur, and the production company applied to the Nova Scotia Film & Television Production Incentive Fund, an application would go through NSBI’S process.

“Approved applications are posted to NSBI’S disclosure page, a news release is issued, and it is posted to the province’s accountability act website. There is no disclosure for this particular application,” she said.
