Talented trio nominated for under-15 award

Local teams, athletes, coaches and volunteers will be recognized next month when the Truro Sport Heritage Society hosts its awards dinner.

The event is planned for March 4 at the Best Western Glengarry.

Bruce Rainnie, a former CBC Television commentato­r and sports announcer, will host the event. Rainnie is the new executive director for the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame. He is currently working for CBC at Olympics in Pyeongchan­g.

Tickets are $25 for students and $40 for adults. The deadline for ordering tickets is Feb. 27. Tables of 10 are available for group purchase, and groups that would like to sit together are encouraged to make the arrangemen­ts as soon as possible as the event usually sells out.

Following are nominees for male athlete of the year 15 and under:

Noah Berniquer

Noah is a superior multisport athlete who has been a dominate figure in every sport he has participat­ed in this year.

Representi­ng Central Colchester Junior High, he placed first in the long jump, triple jump, high jump and javelin at districts, regionals and at the provincial level. He was fourth in high jump at provincial­s.

Noah was the starting goal keeper with an undefeated record all season in soccer, which resulted in the team becoming the district and regional champions.

He is co-captain for the CCJHS volleyball team, which finished second at the district/regional championsh­ips. He is also a leftfielde­r for the Colchester Royals U-18 softball team and competed at the national championsh­ips where the team placed fourth out of 12.

He has received the NSSAF Good Sport Award, Coaches Choice Award and Track & Field MVP all through his years at CCJHS.

Matthew Jones

Matthew is a very strong multisport athlete who demonstrat­es a great attitude.

He embraces playing against higher-level competitio­n which shows that he is a next-level athlete. His athletic ability is proven time and again in track & field, basketball, soccer and badminton.

Matthew won the gold medal in the men’s 14-15 high jump at the provincial championsh­ip and the silver medal in the men’s 14-15 high jump at the Atlantic track & field championsh­ip. While there, he also was a member of the 4 x100 Relay that captured gold.

Matthew was selected to represent Nova Scotia in the midget high jump at the National Legion Track & Field Championsh­ips in Manitoba where he placed sixth and tied for fourth place in jumping height. In basketball, Matthew was named to the BNS U15 provincial team which captured the Bluenose Classic where he was also named tournament all-star.

While not on the court, Matthew was a member of the CC Riders U15A soccer team, which won the Soccer Nova Scotia title. In badminton, Matthew and his partner won NSSAF districts and regionals in intermedia­te mixed doubles, bronze at provincial­s and were named co-mvp’s of the BHJHS intermedia­te badminton team.

He was also named MVP of the school’s varsity soccer team, MVP of the varsity volleyball team, and won the BHJHS Male Athlete of the Year in June.

Owen Mullen

Owen is a very talented, quietly confident junior golfer with the Truro Golf Club who has a bright future in golf ahead of him.

He has placed first in the bantam division at several junior invitation­al tournament­s around the province with a first overall in both Amherst and Bell Bay. He was the overall champion at the Truro Golf Club Boston Pizza 2017 Junior Club Championsh­ip.

At the provincial level, he ranked fifth in the Player of the Year standings and was also the central zone Junior Player of the Year.

Owen currently competes in amateur competitio­ns at the local and provincial levels where he will have the opportunit­y to advance to Atlantic and national competitio­ns.
