Death Matters workshop offered in Truro

There are more choices than many people realize when it comes to end of life decisions and upcoming workshops are designed to help people explore those choices.

Death Matters meetings allow participants to explore, discuss and make decisions about end of life care. Topics include: What measures should be taken to keep you alive? Who do you want to speak for you if you are unable to do so? What are your choices for a funeral and disposal of corpse?

“People do so much to plan for birthdays and weddings, but sometimes don’t plan for this one thing we know for sure is going to happen,” said Dawn Carson, of Death Matters. “The workshops tend to be very rich in conversation. They get people talking about things they haven’t thought of for themselves.”

Death Matters has held workshops in the Halifax area for a few years, but this is the first one offered in Truro.

Each program consists of three meetings. The first is about healthcare directives, the second deals with healthcare delegates and the third is about plans for the body, and any service, after death.

Cost for the program, being held April 21 and 28, and May 5, from 2-4 p.m., is $195.

“Death has been very much in the closet for a long time,” said Carson. “We’re dealing with a very personal experience of the human body.”

People who want to take part are encouraged to register a couple of weeks before so they will receive the homework to be done before the first session.
