Truro woman’s Coldest Night walk raises more than $3,000
Having grown up in an orphanage, Norah Murdoch empathizes with people who have no home, leading her to raise more than $8,000 for the Truro homeless shelter during the past four years.
“Every year, I beat what I raised the year before,” she said. “When people tell me I can’t beat my past total, it spurs me on.”
Last year, Murdoch collected $2,700 for the Coldest Night of the Year walk fundraiser, and brought in $3,030 for the latest walk.
“I raised most of it from going door to door, so I did a lot of catching up with people and drinking tea during the last six weeks. It’s a great way to meet people.
“There were 240 contributors, but every little $5 adds up. I went to a lot of people I know through bowling and TOPS. People seem to be generous here.”
For the first two years, she was part of the Siberian Herd team, and after that she became a member of the TOPS Trotters.
She is a regular walker, and her husband, John, usually completes the 5K route. But this year, because they were just getting over the flu, they choose the 2K walk.
“One year it was so cold, but we could think about going home to heat,” she recalls. “It makes you think about how lucky you are.
“It’s my way to contribute, and it makes you feel good to do something for someone else.”
She hasn’t yet decided what her fundraising goal will be for 2019.
