The First Baptist Girls’ Choir will have their talents on display this month during a gala called Wish Upon a Star at the Best Western Glengarry in Truro.

When Lauren Farrell saw the First Baptist Girls’ Choir perform she immediately decided she wanted to join.

“They all looked so happy to be there and they were doing such a phenomenal job, I thought I had to be part of that,” she said.

The Grade 11 student has now been a member of the choir for three years, and she’s still enthusiastic about it.

“It’s a great group of people and I love the music we do. It’s so much fun singing with the group, and it’s such a great experience. I look forward to it every week.”

Lauren said she prefers singing with a choir to singing alone, as she enjoys hearing voices combine and harmonize.

Grade 6 student Holly Grace, also a member of the Truro Youth Singers, is enjoying her first year in the choir.

“I heard them at Choirs for Comfort and I was astounded,” she said. “I joined in September, and I love the choir so much. I love being able to express personality through singing.”

Holly began performing duets, at church, with her father when she was a preschooler, so she’s very comfortable on stage.

The choir consists of 21 girls, from Grade 6 to Grade 12, under the direction of Bette Pring.

“The choir’s been growing steadily the last seven years,” said Bette. “The numbers had been as low as 10, but now they’re back where they used to be, and that means we can do more pieces.”

Girls audition to join, but she said as long as a girl is willing to learn and be challenged they can work with them.

Choir members are practising some fun and familiar music to

perform at their upcoming gala, which they do every second year, raising funds to help cover the costs of a tour. This year’s tour, to Newfoundland, will take place in late June and early July.
