‘Average guy’ to speak at Women’s Day event in Truro

Glenn Thompson thinks maybe it’s because he’s an “average guy” that he was chosen as a speaker for an International Women’s Day event.

Thompson is one of the guest speakers for the March 8 luncheon organized by the Central Nova Women’s Resource Centre.

“Part of my message is: Maybe I’m not anyone special, but it shouldn’t take that to speak up to gender parity,” he said. “It should be a concern to everyone, so why not have some average guy speak?”

Thompson was a high school teacher for 19 years, and encouraged his students to think about social justice. He is currently the Chignecto-central Regional School Board’s school climate and relational approach consultant.

“In social justice there’s a concept of being an ally and believing in social justice for everyone,” he said. “Members of whatever group held privilege need to be part of the change. When we’re looking for equity it can’t be left up to the marginalized group; the people who historically had power also have to be involved. Gender parity should be everyone’s issue.”

Thompson said he grew up in a very traditional home, but he and his wife share the housework and the care of their three children.

“Children who grow up in homes where roles are shared equally have a mindset and expectation for that in their own relationship,” he added. “I’m by no means an expert, but I’m happy to share my story.”

El Jones, a professor, activist, radio host and former poet-laureate for Halifax, will also speak at the luncheon. A special presentation will be provided by CEC students Bailey Chisholm and Tara Cashen.
