Frost, Hall promoted to Truro Police Service corporals

-

Two officers with the Truro Police Service were recently promoted to corporal. Andrew Frost, who joined the force in 2008, and Judson Hall, who became a fulltime officer in 2016, are the new corporals, and each hope to remain in Truro throughout their working careers.

Cpl. Andrew Frost Andrew Frost was working as a manager of an electronics store in New Brunswick when he decided he needed a new challenge. He has now been a member of the Truro Police Service for almost 10 years.

“I have family members in policing, and I was always interested in it,” he said. “I had become a member of the auxiliary in Saint John and enjoyed that. I was looking for something that was a challenge so I went to the Atlantic Police Academy ( he already had a Bachelor of Arts from the University of New Brunswick.).

After working with the Saint John Police Force and the New Brunswick Sheriff’s department, he was hired by Truro Police Service, for a summer position, in 2008. That November he was hired full-time.

“It’s very much the challenge I was expecting,” he said. “I enjoy the patrol level. I like the variety of calls we get on a daily basis. We’re doing different things each day. It’s busy, but I enjoy it.”

Frost said the hardest part of the job is seeing people who are disappointed because of the limitations of the law.

“I like the interaction with the public, and making a difference

in people’s lives and in the community.

“I enjoy taking part in community events, and the camaraderie with fellow officers. You get to know and work with people more than if you’re in a larger agency.

“I hope to stay in Truro. I feel appreciated by the public and the management team. Being promoted shows me that the management team has faith in me, and I’m very appreciative of it.”

He and his wife, Karyn, are often busy taking their 13-yearold daughter, Brianna, to cheerleading and tae kwon do events. He enjoys playing in charity hockey games and, with encouragement from his daughter, is now involved in tae kwon do. Cpl. Judson Hall As a child, Judson Hall looked

up to police officers, but wasn’t aware of how much they did. Now, with a few years of experience, he knows what the job involves, and feels lucky to be working with the Truro Police Service.

“When you’re young you just think it’s about putting the bad guys in jail, but there’s a lot more to it,” he said. “You deal with a lot of complex issues around mental health, children’s aid, assault victims…”

Hall, whose father was a chief petty officer in the navy, was born in Victoria, B.C., and grew up in Quispamsis, N.B. Although he served with the military reserves from 2001 until 2017, achieving the rank of Corporal 1st Class and receiving the Canadian Forces decoration medal in 2017, he was drawn to a career in small-town policing.

“I wanted something where I wouldn’t be transferred, and there’s a nice family aspect here,” he said. “Everyone knows everyone, and knows everyone’s family, and they take care of one another.

“The chief supports me in getting my degree (in police studies).

“It’s not the same in a big organization. I’m really grateful to have such a great police service behind me. I couldn’t ask for a better place to work.”

Hall attended Holland College and worked in Charlottetown, Borden-carleton and Springhill before coming to Truro on a term position in 2015.

He became a full-time member of the service in February 2016 and hopes to remain until retirement.

“I really like Truro,” he said. “It’s nice neighbourhood where I live and the school system is good. It’s close to Halifax and the airport.

“I really like working in Truro, and when they told me I was being promoted to corporal I was surprised. I was like, ‘What? Really?’ I put a lot of effort in so it was great.”

Hall enjoys taking part in community activities like Christmas Heroes (an event police held for children) and plans to volunteer at this year’s Safe Grad if he’s not on duty.

He took the ski instructor program, and hopes to get more involved in ski activities in the future.

At the moment, he is spending as much time as possible with his family: wife, Nicole and daughters; Sofia, 3, and Maddison, 9 months.
