Atom A ’Cats earn silver

Provincial champions being crowned this weekend in Truro

-

The Truro Inglis Jewellers Bearcats can hold their heads high after a successful season on ice resulted in a silver medal.

The Bearcats were blanked 5-0 by the South Shore Sharks in the atom A division final at Hockey Nova Scotia’s Day of Champions at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre.

The Sharks held a 2-0 lead after two periods and scored a pair of goals early in the third to put the contest out of reach.

South Shore would add an empty netter in the dying seconds to take home the championship.

The atom A final was one of six games played Friday during the Day of Champions event.

In the atom B final, the Bedford Blues downed Cape Breton West 3-0, while Glace Bay doubled up on Chebucto 6-3 to win the atom AA title.

Midget A, midget B and minor junior champions were also crowned on Friday (results not available at press time).

Today, provincial champions will be decided at the RECC in the following divisions: peewee B (8:30 a.m.), peewee A (10:30 a.m.), peewee AA (12:30 p.m.), bantam B (2:30 p.m.) and bantam A (4:30 p.m.).

The Day of Champions format was introduced in 2015 and sees the top team from Hockey Nova Scotia’s North Conference take on the best team from the South Conference in a single championship game that will determine a provincial winner.

Former NHL goaltender and Brookfield native Lyle Carter is the honourary chair of the weekend’s festivities.

All games will be streamed live online by Bell Aliant TV1.
