Preparations underway for giant annual book fair

- BY LYNN CURWIN

The biggest event of the year for book lovers, is coming up in May.

The Bible Hill Kinsmen’s 3rd Annual Colchester Book Fair will take place May 11 and 12 at Truro Mall, and this year they’ve partnered with Slate Youth Centre to run the event.

“This is great for us,” said Crystal Crossan-zak, director of the youth centre. “It helps us raise funds and gives us an opportunity to connect with another group. It’s also great work experience.”

She said last year Slate had trouble with fundraisers because of unpredictable weather for a yard sale, and lack of suitable space for a car wash, so they’re excited to be involved with a large, indoor event.

“We’ll be helping with things like sorting ahead of time, and we’ll be there on the day of the sale,” said Crossan-zak. “We’re really looking forward to this.”

Proceeds from the book fair will go to Slate Youth Centre and other local groups supported by the Bible Hill Kinsmen.

The Kinsmen took over the book sale after the Canadian Federation of University Women, which ran the event for more than 50 years, gave it up.

“The first year, we didn’t know what to expect, but the response was overwhelming,” said James Faulkner, communications director with the organization.

“That made it easy to decide to do it again.”

He said a committee chooses a group to partner with each year, enabling them to help in several different areas of the community.

“It sounds like Slate has a lot of people who will help with things, and that shows they really want to be part of it.”

Donations of books, puzzles, games, DVDS, CDS and comics can be dropped at both Sobeys locations in Truro, Masstown Market, Truro Farmers’ Market, Fundy Appliance (178 Pictou Rd.),

Shur Gain Feeds ‘n Needs (50 Juniper St.) and Truro Mall.

People are asked not to bring technical manuals, textbooks, encyclopedias, magazines, VHS tapes, or Reader’s Digest condensed books.

The book fair will be held at Truro Mall, May 11, 6-9 p.m., and May 12, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., with books being sold be weight.

Last year’s event enabled the Kinsmen to make a $2,000 donation to the Colchester East Hants VON.
