‘It was a very heroic move’

Quick response cited in saving man from burning house

- BY HARRY SULLIVAN

When Dwayne Green heard the voice on his pager mention someone being trapped in a burning building, his brain went into overdrive.

“When you hear entrapment the alarms all go o , you do what you have to do,” the volunteer Salmon River firefighter said. “So I booted up there.”

Green, an independent general contractor, was on his way to work Wednesday morning when he heard the dispatch go out for 117 Pictou Rd. in Bible Hill.

e Salmon River Fire Brigade was not involved in the call but being close by and knowing the urgency of the situation, Green responded anyhow.

“I guess I was the rst one there and then the RCMP pulled in right behind me,” he said. “Good timing, I guess.”

Green removed an extension ladder from his work truck and donned his re ghting gear. With the assistance of two RCMP officers, the ladder was placed up against the house and Green went up to help guide down the lone, elderly resident who was frantically looking out of the secondfloor window.

“As soon as they put the ladder up the guy was started out the window. He was coming whether we helped him or not, I think,” Green said.

The man who lived in the apartment has not been identified. He was checked at the hospital and released with a clean bill of health and now is reportedly staying with his sister.

“Apparently the story is, the cat woke him up and he tried to get down and he opened the door and there was a lot of smoke. So, that’s when he came back up and called 911.”

Green said he does not know the fate of the cat.

The cause of the re remains under investigation although there has been nothing to indicate foul play.

Green said Bible Hill refight- ers were quick to respond and arrived moments after the man was safely on the ground.

“I have nothing but respect for him for helping out the way he did,” Bible Hill Fire Chief Joey Bisson said. “It was a very heroic move and we’re proud to be partners with all these people.”

Green, however, humbly downplayed any accolades for his efforts.

“Just the right time and right place,” he said.
