Show pays tribute to comedian Macdonald

-

As a teenager Marc Sauvé sat at home watching Mike Macdonald perform stand-up comedy on television years ago. But he could never have guessed he would one day be planning a tribute to the man he considered an idol.

“I knew he was the funniest comic in the world,” said Sauvé.

Sauvé will be performing a Tribute to Macdonald at the Marigold Cultural Centre on May 10 to raise money for the Boys and Girls Club of Truro and Colchester.

Macdonald passed away in March due to heart complications.

Sauvé has been performing stand-up for the past 25 years and owns Funny Fundraisers, a company that arranges comedy shows for charities and organizations to help them raise money.

Funny Fundraisers has held more than 650 shows and raised more than $1.5 million for charities since it started in 2009.

Sauvé met Macdonald in 2002 when he opened for him.

“It was a surreal experience, to go from being the quiet guy in the back of the room who’s too scared to talk to him, to performing together, to actually being friends, hanging out and eating meals together,” he said.

The show will feature Sauvé’s own stand-up routine, as well as some of his favourite Mike MacDonald bits. “It was sort of a knee-jerk reaction,” Sauvé said. “A couple of days after Mike passed I approached the Boys and Girls Club and told them how I wanted to do something where I did a tribute to Mike and talked about things about him I loved and memories. ey loved it.”

Funny Fundraisers: A Tribute to Mike Macdonald starts at 8 p.m. at the Marigold. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased at ticketpro.ca.
