Salsation fundraiser being held in Truro on Saturday
The next generation of Latinbased fitness is coming to Truro, and raising funds for charity.
A Salsation event is being held on Saturday, led by a master instructor from Poland, with funds going to the We Care About Cancer fund.
“Salsation is a dance fitness program,” said Hema Chopra Makkar, who is involved in organizing the event. “It’s spread throughout Europe, and is now building in Asia.
“It’s not just about the exercise. It’s functional training and the movement is matched beautifully to the music. The movements are very grounded, so they’re easy on the joints, and the musicality and lyrical expression of Salsation makes you want to do more.”
Chopra Makkar, who is a fitness instructor, fell in love with Salsation when she saw a video online, and in 2016 she and two other women went to Germany to train. They became the first certified Salsation instructors in Canada. There are now 11 in Nova
Scotia, with two of them in Truro.
Przemek Primo Waszczyszyn, an elite trainer, is coming to Nova Scotia to help the instructors keep their certification, and is volunteering his time to raise funds for charity at three events. Along with the Truro event, he is taking part in programs in New Glasgow and Sherbrooke.
“It’s about the movement, and it’s easy,” said Chopra Makkar. “I’m a fitness instructor because
I love it. I think a lot of people will love this if they try it.”
She will be offering classes in the area beginning in September.
The Truro event will take place at the Nova Scotia Community College gymnasium on Saturday, May 5, from 2-3:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance, and can be purchased through e- transfer to hemachopra194@gmail.com, using the password ‘Poland,’ or $20 at the door.
