Nine dashes on tap for Truro Raceway
Sixty-two horses are on the docket for this evening’s ninedash program, including three out of Saint John for connection Stephen Downey and trainer/ driver, Steve Mason.
Post-time is 6: 30 p. m. with qualifiers on tap for 5:15 p.m.
Truro’s 2017 leading dash winner, New Brunswick native, Todd Trites, fresh off of an impressive triple on opening night, gets the call on three this evening. Trites teamed up with connections Dawn Ellis and Dr. James Shive to spearhead his 2018 season. Ellis, owner/trainer, also experienced an exciting start to the spring meet with a trio of winners — Goliath Reigns, Beach Fighter A (co-owned with her dad, Donnie) and Montreal Phil (co-owned with her brother Jeff).
Kentucky Derby tomorrow
The 144th renewal of the greatest two minutes in sports is set for tomorrow from the most legendary race track in the world, Churchill Downs. Casino Nova Scotia, Brewsters, Bedford and the Truro Horsemen’s Club will be simulasting live action from the Kentucky Derby as 20 thoroughbreds line up in this spectacular event. Coverage gets underway at 11:30 a.m.
Chase the Ace growing
Chase The Ace is growing with only nine cards left and the pot estimated to top out at $ 19,000 this week. Tickets sell for $5 each or five for $20 and are available on Sundays at the Truro Horsemen s Club between 1 and 3 p.m. and Friday nights at the Truro Raceway. Draws are held on Sundays.
Bursary project
For the 12th straight year, Standardbred Canada and the Atlantic provinces have joined forces to create the Atlantic Provinces Bursary Project. This program could award up to five student bursaries for post-secondary education for students in the Atlantic provinces. This project is funded by Standardbred Canada, Nova Scotia Harness Racing Industry Association, P.E.I. Harness Racing Industry Association and the Stretch Drive Fund created by the Atlantic Provinces Harness Racing Commission. Applications can be obtained by contacting kwvlaar@standarbredcanada.ca. The deadline to apply is June 15, 2018.
Driving challenge
For the first time since its inception, Truro Raceway will host the Atlantic Regional Drivers Champion Challenge. Slated for Friday, June 29, the participating drivers have been announced:
N. S. — Darren Crowe, Redmond Doucet, Gerard Kennedy
P.E.I. — Gilles Barrieau, Marc Campbell, Ken Murphy Jason Hughes
N.B. — Todd Trites
The challenge will encompass eight dashes with each driver starting from each of the eight positions and awarded points based on their finishing spot. The top two point earners will advance to the National Driving Championship slated for Grand River, Ont., on Sept. 26.
