Walk for Alzheimer’s being held in Truro on Sunday

- BY LYNN CURWIN

People are encouraged to enjoy a walk through downtown Truro and learn more about dementia on Sunday, as the Walk for Alzheimer’s takes place.

Registration begins at 12:30 p.m., at the Truro Farmers’ Market, and is followed by festivities at 1 p.m., and opening ceremonies at 1:30 p.m., with walkers heading out at 2 p.m.

“People will be able to have team photos taken, and there will be a planting activity for children,” said Sarah Lyon, director of philanthropy for the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia. “ ere’s such a great community feeling at the event.

“It’s an opportunity for families, and those living with the disease, to come together and realize they’re not alone. Not only is the society there, but others in the community are there to support them. It’s also a chance for people to learn more.”

e route is ve kilometres, but it’s not necessary to walk the full distance. Participants are encouraged to walk the length they’re comfortable with.

“We’ll have puppy registration, because people like to walk with their dogs,” said Lyons. “Because dogs can’t go in the farmers’ market, there will be volunteers outside who will hold onto them while people are inside.

“This is the second year for the walk in Truro, and we’re expecting 100 to 120 people, which is what we had last year. is is our largest fundraiser of the year, and we really appreciate the support.”

Funds raised at the Truro event stay in the Cumberland-colchester area to help those a ected by dementia. For more information, visit the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia website.
