Truro man will be glued to the telly for Harry and Meghan’s big day

Al Mcnutt’s determined he won’t be sleeping in on May 19 – he doesn’t want to miss a moment of the royal wedding coverage.
The wedding service for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle is scheduled for noon – making it 8 a.m. in Nova Scotia – and there’s sure to be related programming leading up to the ceremony.
“I can hardly wait for it,” said Mcnutt, who lives in Truro. “I’ll be glued to the television.
“I think they’re a beautiful couple. You can see they really love one another. The way he shines when he’s with her, you can see they’re soul mates. I hope it works for them.”
Mcnutt has been fascinated with royalty for many years, and not just British royalty. He keeps up with the monarchies in Spain, Jordan, Sweden, Norway, Belgium and many others.
“There’s a real change in how they’re marrying,” he said. “They always married into royalty before, but now many of them are married to commoners.
“The younger people are taking the stuffiness out of the monarchies. You see so much vitality with Kate and William.”
He’s watched televised cover- age of other royal weddings with fascination.
“With Charles and Diana, it was a really lovely wedding, but I wondered how she’d fit in,” he said. “Meghan is used to publicity and is comfortable in front of the public.
“She and Harry are a good match. She’s done things to help other people, and that’s where Harry’s heart is. They seem to like the same things.”
Mcnutt has seen the Queen four times, three of those times while she was in a car. The fourth was when he attended a Royal Garden Party, as a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Award. At the garden party, he was close enough to touch the monarch. Of course, he knew better.
He has books and collectable items connected with royalty in every room of his house. The majority are related to British monarchy.
“I follow the Queen and the family with a vengeance,” he said. “It’s obsessive, and I don’t know why. I just find royalty intriguing.”
And being in the loop, he also noted, though it’s currently being overshadowed by the more high- profile wedding, Princess Eugenie’s marriage to Jack Brooksbank will take place in October. Eugenie is the second daughter of Andrew and Sarah.
