‘Cats scrap
Wildcats have two big innings to take win
The Truro Bearcats returned to the diamond Friday, as they hosted the Kentville Wildcats to open their 2018 Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League schedule.
The visiting Kentville Wildcats put a damper on the Truro Bearcats’ home opener Friday night, downing the locals 10-5 in Nova Scotia Senior Baseball league play.
It was to be the first of two home games on the weekend for the Bearcats, but their contest slated for Sunday night at the TAAC Grounds was cancelled and will be rescheduled to a later date.
The Wildcats opened the scoring in the first inning Friday to take a 1-0 lead.
Truro came back in the third though, to go ahead 4-1. With Adam Lombard aboard, Matt Mingo drilled a line shot down the left field line, good for a double. Justin Morton singled to bring in those two, and after a John Chapman single, Morton was brought in with a Jeff Chisholm single making it 3-1.
The four- run inning was capped with John Chapman on third. Chapman bolted for home with pitcher Zack Zinck in his wind-up and was safe, in a rare attempt to steal home, to make it 4-1.
The Wildcats, however, re- sponded with five runs in the seventh and another four in the top of the ninth. The Bearcats mustered one run in the bottom of the ninth to round out the 10-5 final.
Zinck was the winning pitcher, lasting to the ninth after coming in for starter Alex Ostrov in the third. Chapman took the loss. The Wildcats out-hit the Bearcats 7-6 in the contest. Next up for the Bearcats will be a trip to Dartmouth to take on the Moosehead Dry Thursday. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Dartmouth then comes to Truro Friday for a 7:30 p.m. contest at the TAAC Grounds.
