Locals among finalists for Sport Nova Scotia awards
Colchester County will be wellrepresented at the Sport Nova Scotia Support4sport Awards ceremony on Saturday at the Halifax Convention Centre.
Three local athletes and an umpire are among award finalists.
Truro snowboarder Liam Moffatt is a finalist for male individual athlete of the year, while junior curling teammates — and cousins — Karlee Burgess, of Hilden, and Lindsey Burgess, of Truro, are members of the Kaitlyn Jones rink that has been nominated for team of the year.
Softball umpire Clinton Harvey, of Valley, is in the running for official of the year.
Moffatt, one of the top young snowboard-crossers in the country, had a great year on the Canada Snowboard SBX development team. He was 32nd at the Turkey World Cup, before winning a North American Cup event at Mont-original in Quebec, which earned him a World Cup spot for the entire 2018-19 season.
The Burgess girls captured provincial and national junior curling titles, before winning the gold medal at the world championship in Scotland in March. The girls’ coach, Andrew Atherton, is up for coach of the year, while teammate Kristin Clarke is a finalist for the female team athlete of the year award.
Harvey was named 2017 Umpire of the Year for Softball Canada. He represented Nova Scotia at the Canada Games in Winnipeg last summer and was also deputy umpire-in-chief at the U18
men’s Canadian championship in O’leary, P.E.I.
Among other finalists is fastpitch softball pitcher Justin Schofield, who led the East Hants Mastodons to a national men’s championship last summer in Saskatoon. Schofield pitched all 21 innings of his team’s playoff round games. He is a finalist in the male team athlete of the year category.
The Support4sport Awards recognize the achievements of Nova Scotia athletes, teams, coaches, officials and volunteers in ama-
teur sport over the past year. Each of the finalists were nominated by their provincial sport organization as the best in their sport.
