Call for creativity
Truro library Media Lab offers many opportunities for users
Never let it be said it’s all about the books.
There’s a small room filled with some creative high- tech equipment just waiting to be put to use at Colchester- East Hants Public Library’s Truro branch.
The John & Ann Gourley Media Lab offers people a chance to create photos, video and music.
“We’ve been open for use for a few months now, but a lot of people aren’t aware of it,” said Bill Morgan, administrator of automated and technical services at the library.
“We have digital cameras, a video camera, lights, green screen, keyboard, digital drum kit, condenser microphone, headphones…”
There is also a computer with recording and photo- and videoediting software.
People using the space can
bring in instruments such as electric guitars.
Walls of the room are thick enough making them sound resistant – but it’s not soundproofed, so there are limits to what is allowed.
The midi keyboard can imitate many instruments.
“We ask that people go through a brief orientation prior to using the space,” said Morgan. “Once they’ve done that, anyone 13 or older can sign up. If they’re 12 or under they need to be with an adult who’s gone through orientation.
“The idea of an orientation seems to scare some people, but it doesn’t take long.”
To request an orientation, people can email the library at medialab@cehpubliclibrary.ca . The library can also be called at 902-895-4183.
Up to five people are permitted in the lab at a time, and sessions of up to two hours can be booked.
The person who books the space is responsible for any damage to equipment.
