Bearcats lose double-header to Sooners

The Truro Bearcats dropped both ends of a double-header Saturday against the Sydney Sooners in Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League action.

The Sooners, defending league champions, took the opener 7-2 Saturday with Justin Brewer posting his first win of the season on the mound, while Jordan Johnson was saddled with his first loss.

Justin Morton led the Truro bats with a double and two singles, while John Chapman had a pair of singles and drove in a run.

The Bearcats continued to show an aggressive style on the base paths, as both Morton and Chapman stole two bases apiece.

For Sydney, Jordan Shepherd belted a home run, added a single and drove in two, while scoring twice himself. Sean Ferguson chipped in with three singles.

The Sooners outhit the Bearcats by a 9-7 margin.

In the second game, Chapman had a solid performanc­e at the plate, pounding a two-run homer, adding a double and two singles, while scoring twice and swiping a base.

Chris Farrow paced Sydney with two doubles, a single, an RBI and two runs scored.

The Sooners held the edge in hits, 11-8.

Adam Macdonald took the win for the Sooners on the hill, while Chapman took the loss.

Heading into Sunday’s scheduled game, the Bearcats were winless in their first six outings of the season. Dartmouth (5-0) and Sydney (2-0) topped the league standings.

The Bearcats visit Kentville Wednesday night for a 7:30 p.m. matchup. Friday, at the TAAC Grounds Truro’s back in action when they host the Halifax Pelham Molson Canadians for a 7:30 p.m. start.

Local ball fans can get their fill the following weekend when the Sooners come to town for three games. Friday, June 22 at 7 p.m. the teams will meet in Game 1 and Saturday there’s a doublehead­er with games at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., all at the TAAC Grounds.
