Brook eld’s Audrey Ross developed an interest in sketching, which later translated to abstract painting. She now sells her artwork to raise funds for the local SPCA.

An early interest in sketching has lead Audrey Ross on a very exciting journey.

“I used to sketch things I saw outside when we were driving in the car,” Ross, 10, of Brook eld, said. “I soon started to draw and I would colour in all my colouring books. It would have been back when I was about ve.”

Later, Ross tried abstract paintings.

“Around my last birthday, August 23, I started mixing colours and making abstracts – I was in uenced by Mark Hamilton, who is an artist. I soon had many paintings stacked under my bed.”

Smiling, Ross explained how she began selling paintings.

“With many paintings under my bed and all over my bedroom walls, (my grandmother Gisele Pineau) came and decided to buy three paintings. It gave me the idea, that was how I started to sell abstracts.”

e enjoyment of painting and selling paintings continued for Ross, leading to her own website – A’s Abstract Paintings. On the website people will nd informa- tion, such as: Audrey is a 10 yearold little girl who loves to paint and loves animals. She has decided to sell some of her paintings. She will be donating 80 per cent of her sales to “Nova Scotia SPCA – Colchester Shelter,” where she is a volunteer.

“ e other 20 per cent I spend on canvases, paints or paint brushes,” Ross told me. “I kind of have my own little business. I want to help the animals there at the SPCA. ere are cats, bunnies, dogs and other animals that need help. Some need medical care but most of all, these animals need homes.”

As of this date – through selling her abstract paintings – Ross has donated $300 to the local SPCA. Working towards her next $100 donation, her paintings have sold as far away as Montreal, Toronto and Florida. Interest has been shown in Ireland as well. Prices of Ross’s paintings range from $8 to $20.

“My goal is to eventually reach $1,000; I will donate most of the money to the SPCA. I hope my donations help the animals, that would make me really happy.”

Ross always liked animals as far back as she can remember, her family has two dogs named Casper and Beej.

“I also have a hamster in my room, Ross said. “His name is Stu y. I would have more animals if I could.”

A Grade 5 student at Brook eld Elementary School, Ross is doing well in school and sometimes gets the nickname “Speedy” from her teachers.

“One thing I enjoy about school is recess; my friends and I play tackle tag. It’s a time when we have a lot of fun together.”

Ross also enjoys playing ball. “I play second base in under-12 fastball for Brookfield Elks. We played this week and we won, it was a lot of fun. Our team plays about one game every week.”

Audrey’s parents – Tim and Lorraine Ross – are very involved in music. Both are with the popular band Cherry Lane, which includes Mark Hamilton and Joanne Hat eld. Tim is also facilitator of a local youth band, Before Monday, which Audrey plans to join. It includes her sister Josee, Abby Fisher, Isabella Johnson and Kayla Kennedy. e group is working on a third CD.

“I play the piano, I also play the drums and I sing in the junior choir in Middle Stewiacke,” Audrey said. “Another thing, my sister Josee and I sing duets, we perform in local events. I also enjoy music with my family.”

At the recent Truro Music Festival, in junior piano, Audrey placed rst in Jazz Blues, Piano.

Other things were also shared by Audrey during a recent visit to her home. Besides telling me her sister Josee was 12, she said her younger brother William was eight. e conversation also touched on things the family enjoys doing together.

“When our whole family gets together and does something that is really an enjoyment – we play water gun ghts. Daddy runs around with his big water gun, it is really a lot of fun because of Daddy and getting to do something with him. Sometimes some friends of our family come and they take part in water gun ghts too.”

An uplifting interview, Audrey is de nitely a very talented young girl.
