Annual Cougar volleyball camp for kids in Grades 3 to 9 set for August

The 21st annual CEC Girls Volleyball Camp will be held this summer.

The four-day session, which runs from Aug. 27 to 30, is one of the largest and most successful camps in Eastern Canada, and typically attracts up to 130 participan­ts.

This camp is open to girls and boys in Grades 3 to 9 as of June, 2018. It runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day with instructio­n in fundamenta­l skills, position play, and offensive and defensive systems of play.

The campers are divided into five separate groups based on age and skill level.

Registrati­on forms are available from Bob Piers at 78 Park St., Truro (902-897-1997). The registrati­on fee is $120 with a family rate of $160 for two campers and $180 for three campers. Registra- tion is limited and the deadline is July 31.

The coaches for this year’s camp include Bob Piers, Harvey Maceachern, Paul Settle, Hilary Cormier, Suzanne Fougere, Carrie Peck, Jolayne Mackenzie, Taunya Pynn-crowe, Paul Worden and Ally Fanning.

Piers has been involved in coaching high school girls and boys volleyball teams since 1966. He is presently the coach of the CEC varsity girls team. Maceachern has coached the boys volleyball team at CEC for the past 27 years, while Settle has been involved in coaching and refereeing volleyball in the region for the past 32 years. A cofounder of the Cougar Camp, Settle is the current head coach at Mount Allison University.

Cormier, a former CBU player, has coached high school and club volleyball in the Truro area for the six seasons, while Fougere has been coaching in this area for several years, first at Hants East and then at CEC, where she is an assistant coach with the Division 1 Cougars.

Peck has coached at the junior high, high school, and club levels in the Truro area for nine years and before that in Hants East. Last summer, she was a manager/ coach with the Nova Scotia Canada Games girls team.

Mackenzie began her coaching career as the boys coach at Bible Hill Junior High School where she guided the Huskies for nine years. She switched to coaching girls six years ago and since has produced a steady flow of players for the CEC team. Pynn-crowe, who played on AUS championsh­ip teams at Mount Allison University, coached girls volleyball at both South Colchester Academy and CEC for many years. She has been the assistant coach with the CEC boys program for three years.

Worden is one of the highestran­king officials in Nova Scotia and president of Volleyball Nova Scotia. He has also been active as a coach since returning to the Truro area in 2015.

Fanning is a former CEC player who was an assistant coach with the U17 provincial championsh­ip team this past winter. A kinesiolog­y student at Dalhousie University, Fanning was the team trainer for the Dal Tigers varsity women’s team this past year.
