Mason’s ready to go
New camper will allow family to enjoy some fun outdoors
Eight- year- old Mason Park grinned shyly as he was handed keys to his new toy – a camping trailer courtesy of the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada and Cain Camper Sales in Brentwood.
He’s a bit young to drive it around, but his family looks forward to a well-earned camping excursion now that Mason has nished three years of chemotherapy for leukemia and is back to the business of being a typical boy. It is all thanks to fundraising by Children’s Wish.
“I’m so proud of him,” said Mason’s mother Jenny Mosley. “He is excited all the time, he is emotional in good ways, he’s just amazing to watch.”
Mason is an outdoorsy and active child, who enjoys a good swim as well as hanging out at the skate park and riding a scooter.
However, when he turned three it was a very di erent story.
Mason suffered recurring fevers and always seemed tired compared to his energetic twin brother, Maddox. At rst, his parents didn’t understand why.
“We noticed there was something di erent between him and his twin,” said dad Jared Park. “ at was when Jenny took him to the doctor and they thought it was just minor at first. We brought him back a few days later and went for bloodwork and that’s when we found out. We were in Halifax that night and then started treatment the next day.”
Jared flew home from Alberta as soon as he received the bad news.
Mason’s chemotherapy lasted three years, which meant carefully- timed medications and meals for him.
Luckily, the treatment ended four years ago and Mason has enjoyed good health since. He still receives regular medical checkups to make sure the cancer has not returned.
Currently, Mason sees the doctor once every three months. By the time he’s an adult, he will have yearly checkups.
For now, he’s ready to join his family on a road trip to Port Hood this weekend to see family.
However, that’s just the start. e Park-mosley family plans to go camping and road tripping across Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island this summer.
At some point in the future the family may even drive out west to the Rockies.
“It’s everything for him; he’s been waiting for a long time for it and he’s just really excited to be able to get to use it,” said Mosley.
For more than 30 years, Children’s Wish has worked to grant wishes to over 25,000 children and their families.
