Truro officer is part of the welcoming experience

Truro Police Const. Katie Titus likes meeting people, and she’s found the welcome centre is a great place to do just that.

The officer, who is doing foot patrols during the summer, has set up a base at the centre where she can meet with people and share information.

“As I was walking, I thought it would be nice to have a community office at this end of town,” she said. “I worked in Charlottetown a bit, and they had one, so I asked the chief.”

She was given the go-ahead, and messaged the town to find out about available space. The welcome centre was put forward as an option.

“I have the opportunity to meet a lot of people, from around here and from different places,” she said. “Kids come in and I talk to them and build positive relationships.

“I like people and I like talking, so this is good.”

She’s currently at the centre about two hours a day, although her hours change, depending on her shift. Staff at the welcome centre can usually let people know what time she’ll be in, and will pass along messages.

The police area was set up in mid-july, and Titus hopes to have it in place earlier in the year for 2019.

Truro Police Chief Dave Macneil said the centre provides people with a place where they can stop and talk to a police officer in a relaxed setting, and provides a good outreach opportunity.

Const. Kelly Quinn is also outside a lot this summer, doing bicycle patrols.

Truro Police had a community office, which was staffed by Dennis Wright, at the Truro Centre in the 1990s.
