Cougars open season with tournament victory

The Cobequid Cougars Team Blue opened its Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation Division 1 volleyball season in golden fashion, defeating Par-en-bas of Tusket in two highly contested sets (25-23, 26-24) at the annual Cougar Classic.

The Cougars went undefeated in the round robin with wins over Three Oaks ( 2521, 25- 23), Westisle ( 25- 11, 2517), West Kings ( 25- 16, 25- 18) and Colonel Gray ( 25- 6, 2520) before outlasting Bluefield in the semifinal in straight sets (25-19, 25-20).

Leading the way for Team Blue was Thomas Vickers (79 per cent passing, four ace serves, 32 kills), libero Isaac Macnaughto­n (20 perfect passes), Sean Gallie (70 per cent passing), Noah Boudreau (55 per cent offensive serving), Adam Mceachren (17 kills), and setters Austin Atkinson and Aiden Fitzpatric­k, sharing 94 assists.

CEC Team Orange, made up of primarily Grade 10 players, played five very competitiv­e matches, losing to Dartmouth (21-25, 27-25, 9-15), Horton (2125, 25- 19, 13- 15), Bluefield (22-25, 12-25), Par-en-bas (1925, 20-25), and Colonel Gray (19- Aiden Fitzpatric­k, left, and Adam Mceachren of the Cobequid Cougars block at the net during action against the Colonel Gray Colonels during the annual Cougar Classic high school boys volleyball tournament Saturday.
