The CEC Cougars are sitting at two wins and a loss after they held o Halifax West Warriors to win their home opener.
e Cobequid Educational Centre Cougars built up a big lead in the opening half, and then had to fend o a late surge by the Halifax West Warriors Sunday in NSSAF football action at James Macpherson Stadium.
e Cougars prevailed in their home opener, 44-26.
CEC scored late in the opening quarter to take a 7-0 lead. In the second quarter, the Cougars went ahead 23-7 before closing out the half with a TD on the nal play before the break, and going ahead 30-7.
It was 37-13 heading in to the nal quarter, but the scrappy Warriors wouldn’t roll over. ey made it interesting, coming to within 11 points at 37-26, aided by an interception returned for a touchdown and another major scored after recovering a CEC fumble.
e Cougars set matters straight, scoring a TD with about a minute to go, and then picked o a desperation pass by the Warriors with seconds to go to seal the win.
Quarterback Michael Adams was 8-for-10 passing for 100 yards and two touchdowns, and added ve carries for 34 yards and a rushing TD. Torro Gabrielli had seven carries for 74 yards and two majors, while Jordan Waller had eight touches for 83 yards and a touchdown. Sam Hyde and Charles Toole also had touchdown receptions for CEC.
On defense, Waller had four tackles, Breton Phillips added two tackles and an interception and Ivan Gault made six tackles and a sack. is Saturday, the Cougars are slated to take on the Prince Andrew Panthers in a 6 p.m. game in Burnside.
Sunday, Oct. 7 the Cougars will entertain the CP Allen Cheetahs in a 1 p.m. matchup.
