Baker a two-time Grey Cup champion

e Truro Sports Heritage Society will host its annual Sports Heritage Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Marigold Cultural Centre on Nov. 9.

Four individuals and one team will be enshrined into the Hall, including Sue Kaye (hockey), Steve Locke (fastpitch and golf), Becky Bell Routledge (softball), Terry Baker (football) and the 1968 Truro Trojan midget football team.

Tickets can be purchased for the Induction at the Marigold Cultural Centre for $15 each. A social will begin at 6:30 p.m., with presentations beginning at 7 p.m. For more information, call 902-897-4004.

Today, we take a look at the sporting accomplishments of inductee Terry Baker.

Terry Baker

Colchester County’s longest active professional football player is Terry Baker.

e product of CEC enjoyed a successful university career at Mount Alison (1982- 84) and Acadia (1986). He began playing professional football with the Montreal Alouettes in 1987 and enjoyed a 16-year career in the Canadian Football League.

After Montreal, Baker played with Saskatchewan, Ottawa, Toronto and ended his career back in Montreal. Highlights of his playing years include two Grey Cup wins with di erent teams.

Baker won his rst Grey Cup with Saskatchewan in 1989 and his second with Montreal in 2002. In 1996 he was named an Eastern Division All-star. In 1998 and 2000 he led the league in scoring. He holds seven team kicking records for the Alouettes as well as the CFL record for the longest punt at 90 yards. He is ranked eighth among the CFL’S all-time scoring leaders.

Terry was inducted into the Mount Alison Football Hall of Fame and Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame. Since his playing days, he has coached the SMU Huskies and Acadia Axemen.

Terry and his wife – Krista (Gatchell) of Truro, reside in Lunenburg where they own and operate a retail store.
