- BY LYNN CURWIN

Matt Gayle and Morton Doughty were surprised to nd themselves rst in line when they showed up outside the NSLC store on Court Street Wednesday morning.

e duo arrived around 8 a.m., about two hours before the store opened, and were eagerly anticipating their first pot purchase after cannabis o cially became legal in Canada on Wednesday.

“It was pretty surprising to see there was no one else here,” said Gayle, who recently moved to Truro from Edmonton.

“I want to browse what they have, and see the packaging. It’ll be a lot di erent than seeing it packaged in tin foil.

“I didn’t think this would be legal in my lifetime.”

Doughty, who moved to Truro, from St. John, N.B., three weeks ago, said marijuana helps him with mental health issues.

“ is has been a long time coming,” he said.

“ e prices sound reasonable, so I’d tell people to enjoy the legalization, but don’t go out and drive after using it. Use, but don’t abuse.”

Jon Richard, who moved to Truro from St. John, N.B., about a year ago, was the third person to show up. He hadn’t met Gayle and Doughty before, but within minutes they were sharing laughs and stories as they waited outside the store. By the time the store opened at 10 a.m., about 35 people were in the queue. Wanting to ensure they’d be able to purchase cannabis Wednesday morning, Truro residents, Morton Doughty, left, Jon Richard and Matt Gayle showed up early.
