Cougars win fth straight tournament crown

e CEC girls volleyball team won their fth consecutiv­e high school tournament by defeating the Dartmouth Spartans 25-14, 25-10 in the nal of the Mount Saint Vincent University Invitation­al Tournament.

e Cougars toughest match came on Saturday morning when they were pushed to a third set by Lockview High School from Fall River. In what was probably the best match of the tournament, the CEC squad won the rst set 25-21. The second set was all Lockview (25-17), as the Cougars struggled on serve receive and were very inconsiste­nt with their hitting. The Cougars, however, were able to bounce back and take the third set 15-12.

CEC won the 20-team tournament despite the absence of two key players. Maddie Macgregor, the outstandin­g middle for CEC, was still sidelined with an ankle injury and Maddie Greatorex who is leading the team in kills, attack percentage and serve-receive was out with a back injury.

With a real team effort, the Cougars showed just how much depth and balance they have this season.

e CEC JV team continued to impress with a 10th place nish losing in three close sets to Parkview in the consolatio­n nal.

The Cougars finished first in their round-robin pool with straight set wins over Horton, SAERC, and Auburn, and that tough three-set win over Lockview. ey went on to defeat Halifax West in a quarter nal (25-22, 25-13) and Lockview again in a semifinal (25-17, 25-18) to advance to the nal against Dartmouth.

e CEC junior varsity team had three- set wins over both Yarmouth and Northumber­land on Friday evening. On Saturday, they lost two straight to Dartmouth and dropped a close three set match to Sir John A. to nish third in their pool.

In the consolatio­n playoffs, they defeated Millwood in three sets and C.P. Allen two straight to advance to the consolatio­n nals against Parkview.

Both CEC teams will compete in the Saint Mary’s University high school tournament in Halifax this weekend with fteen of the top teams from Nova Scotia and P.E.I. entered in the event.

BOYS

e CEC boys Team Orange de- feated ree Oaks in straight sets 25-17, 25-20 in the nal to win the 14th annual Wall of Fame Cup in Charlottet­own.

Cougar Orange went undefeated in the roundrobin with match wins over Westisle ( 25- 14, 25- 8), Three Oaks ( 23- 25, 25- 15, 16- 14), and Charlottet­own Rural ( 2518, 25-9).

It was an all CEC matchup in the semi nal, with Team Orange upending Team Blue 25-17, 25-10.

Austin Atkinson led the team with a 54 per cent o ensive serving performanc­e and was selected a tournament allstar. Thomas Vickers led the team in hitting and amassed a 51 per cent o ensive serving score. Vickers was the tournament mvp.

Team Blue nished second in round-robin play with a win over Horton (25-20, 25-27, 15-13) and two close three-set losses to Blue eld and Colonel Gray. Qualifying for playo action for the rst time, Team Blue lost to Team Orange before missing out in the bronze-medal match with a loss to Blue eld in straight sets (1625, 21-25).

Next up the CEC is the annual Westisle Wolverine Classic.
