Millbrook still in negotiations with province to sell legal marijuana

- BY HARRY SULLIVAN

With marijuana now legal in Canada, negotiations are continuing between Millbrook First Nation and the Nova Scotia government to permit sales by the band, Chief Bob Gloade says.

“Nothing concrete until we see how the meeting goes this week,” he told the Truro News just days ahead of the legalization deadline. “Everything is still in negotiations. Once we get everything finalized to proceed, then we will.”

Millbrook First Nation has partnered with a marijuana pro- duction company called Zennabus for supply of its cannabis products.

The company currently has facilities in New Brunswick and British Columbia and a third is under construction in Stellarton.

“And they have arrangements with di erent provinces already to supply their outlets,” Gloade said.

Under current legislation, cannabis products can only be sold in Nova Scotia through select NSLC locations (including an online option).

Although Gloade remains optimistic that an agreement can be reached between his band and the province, he said there is no desire to rush ahead before such arrangements are nalized.

“Our intention is to do it legally,” he said. “We don’t want to put ourselves in a position where it is going to create some legal challenges going forward because then it’s an upward battle.”
