Valuable information

- BY LYNN CURWIN

Truro police held checkpoints to remind area motorists of the dangers of driving while impaired by cannabis.

Truro Police have been busy trying to ensure people are aware of the dangers of impaired driving, whether the substance involved is alcohol or drugs, including cannabis.

One way is by handing out information cards at check-stops.

“Marijuana can impair a person’s ability to drive safely, and now that it’s more readily available there may be more people taking advantage of it,” said Truro Police Inspector Rob Hearn.

“The purpose of the checkstops is to raise awareness that cannabis does impair the ability to drive safely.”

e Never Drive High cards police handed out were produced by the Province, and warn people it’s illegal to operate a motor vehicle when impaired by alcohol or drugs, including prescription drugs.

“If you’re impaired, you’re impaired, whatever substance is involved,” said Hearn.

“A lot of comments on our Facebook posts show some people aren’t educated on the law so we’re trying to get more information out to the public. It’s always been an o ence to drive while impaired, and the law hasn’t changed with the legalization of cannabis.”

Anyone convicted of impaired driving faces penalties including nes, licence suspension and jail time.
